​Today I thought it would be good for us to see what Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God. I think it’s the most important thing to understand if we are to align with the Kingdom.

You see there have both historical misunderstandings about the Kingdom and practical misunderstandings of the Kingdom that can still easily crop up today when we don’t have a clear understanding of the Kingdom.

How are we supposed to Align with the Kingdom if we don’t understand what the Kingdom is?

Don’t worry, there is so much Jesus taught about the Kingdom—and I’ll try to touch on it today. I will distill it to a single statement so you know what the Kingdom is and give you a tool to align with the Kingdom of God in the day to day of your everyday.

Let’s start with a portion of scripture that tells you everything I want to tell you today.

Colossians 1:9-14 (NLT) So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.Then the way you live will always honour and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

Before we go further, can I pray?

I’m going to start with a story. I wrote this story 26 years ago—at the beginning of this millennium—that is to say—some of the jokes haven’t aged well.

But I wrote story because I was studying about what Jesus taught on the Kingdom and noticed that Jesus mainly taught on the Kingdom through parables and practice. And I thought the best way to explain every parable would have to be in a story. I did up this video about 15 years later.

The Mystery of the Kingdom

I began by saying there have been both historical misunderstandings about the Kingdom and practical misunderstandings of the Kingdom that can still easily crop up today when we don’t have a clear understanding of the Kingdom. Let’s look at the historical misunderstandings first.

Historical Misunderstandings

1. Historically Misunderstood - Political/Military Expectations

Ancient Jews: Many expected the Messiah to establish a political kingdom, overthrowing Roman rule and restoring Israel’s national glory.

Result: When Jesus spoke of the Kingdom, some disciples imagined earthly power and conquest (see Acts 1:6).

Acts 1:3-8 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The Kingdom of God is not politically or militarily established.

2. Historically Misunderstood - Geographic/Physical Location

Early Christians & Later Movements: Some believed the Kingdom of God was a specific place on earth, such as Jerusalem, or would be established through physical territory.

But Jesus specifically said, “You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already within you.” Luke 17:21

The Kingdom of God is not a physical or geographical location.

3. Historically Misunderstood - Institutional Church as the Kingdom

- Medieval Christianity: The Catholic Church, especially during the Middle Ages, sometimes equated itself directly with the Kingdom of God, implying membership in the institution = citizenship in the Kingdom.

But Jesus said, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it.” Matthew 16:18

This is a poor translation. Gates are not something that come against us. Gates are what we come against and tear down. The gates of hell cannot stand against the church advancing the kingdom.

The Kingdom of God is not the church. The church is not the Kingdom.

4. Historically Misunderstood - End Times Only

Apocalyptic Movements: Some groups have taught that the Kingdom is entirely future—something that arrives only with the Second Coming, ignoring its present reality.

Jesus sent out his twelve and told them “As you go, proclaim this message: “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. Matthew 10:7-8

The Kingdom of God is not only for the future. It’s for the here and now.

And it’s not just historical misunderstandings. There are practical misunderstandings of the kingdom today…

Practical Misunderstandings Today

1. Practical Misunderstandings The Kingdom = Moral or Social Program

Many view the Kingdom of God as simply living a good life, helping others, or supporting social justice causes—reducing it to ethical behaviour, not divine reign.

Is the Kingdom just doing good works?

No. We do good works so that people will see those good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

2. Practical Misunderstandings The Kingdom = Personal Success/Prosperity

Some interpret the Kingdom as personal blessing or prosperity—assuming that following God guarantees material wealth or health.

Does the Kingdom assure personal success or prosperity?

No! Jesus has promised that in this world you will have trouble. But take heart because He’s overcome the world. Name that and claim that.

3. Practical Misunderstandings The Kingdom = Church Activities

People often think attending church or participating in religious rituals equates to advancing or entering the Kingdom.

Aren’t church activities automatically kingdom activities?

No! The church and its activities is NOT the Kingdom…the church should extend the Kingdom of God, but never replace the Kingdom of God.

4. Practical Misunderstandings The Kingdom = Private Spiritual Experience

Others see it only as an inward, private spiritual feeling rather than something with public, communal, and transformative aspects.

Is the Kingdom my personal experience?

No! Your personal experience should be part of the Kingdom, but please don’t think the kingdom is the sum of your experience.

What Does Scripture Actually Teach?

The Kingdom is God’s active reign—present wherever God’s will is done (Luke 17:21).

You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already within you. Luke 17:21

The Kingdom is wherever the King’s will is done.

Isn’t God’s will always done?

IF God’s will is always done, why did Jesus teach us to pray your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10?

In Heaven His will is done perfectly. On Earth He works through His people, empowered by His Spirit.

The Kingdom is wherever the King’s will is done.

What to know how I know The Kingdom is NOT the Church…The Kingdom is wherever the King’s will is done.

Look at how Jesus sums up the Sermon on the mount…

Matthew 7:21-23 21 ‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?” 23 Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”

We need to know his will and do his will to align with His Kingdom. The Kingdom is wherever the King’s will is done.

What is His will?

That’s a great question, I’m so glad you asked.

I’ve found three places in the new testament that tell us explicitly what God’s will is for us.

1. God’s will is for you to be Holy…

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 “Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more. For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor— not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife, for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before. God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives. Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.”

Your role: Be holy. 1 Thessalonians 4:3

God’s role: For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13

2. God’s will is for you to live honourable lives…

1 Peter 2:13-17 “For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honour those who do right. It is God’s will that your honourable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.”

Your role: Live honourable lives

God’s role: His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3

3. God’s will is for you to always be joyful, never stop praying and be thankful in all circumstances….

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Your role: always be joyful, never stop praying and always be thankful

God’s role: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

How do you trust in God? You never stop praying. You never stop thanking.

Now. These are big picture keys to how we live our lives in the will of God.

Be Holy.
Live Honourable.
Always be joyful, never stop praying and always be thankful.

When we do these things we are in the will of God.

Remember the Kingdom is wherever God’s will is done.

He helps us live in His will. He empowers us to live in His Kingdom.

But you were created to walk with God in the garden in the cool of the day. You were designed for intimate relationship with Him. It’s not that you have this list of things to check off that allows you to live in His Kingdom. It’s the result of you being the Kingdom that allows you to live this way.

We can find out what pleases the Lord.

Ephesians 5:8-10 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.

FIND Out What Pleases the Lord Tool

F - Follow Holy Spirit’s Leading

I - Imitate what Jesus did

N - Never forget to walk in wisdom

D - Don’t assume you’ve fully grasped the Kingdom

F- Follow Holy Spirt’s Leading

It seemed good to us and Holy Spirit Acts 15:28

I’ve given you the three places in Scripture we’re explicitly told what God’s will is. The rest you need Holy Spirit’s leading. This verse in Acts is from a letter the Elders of the Church in Jerusalem wrote to gentile converts. And it’s significant that James wrote “to us and Holy Spirit” and not “me and Holy Spirit”. We need to get back to communal discernment of what Holy Spirit is saying to us.

Remember: The Kingdom is within you.

Luke 17:20-21 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

Does it seem good to us and Holy Spirit?

I - Imitate What Jesus Did

Jesus only said what He heard the Father say (John 12:49-50; John 14:10). Jesus only did what He saw the Father do (John 5:19).

Do you have that intimacy with the Father?

The Father’s purpose is to make you more and more like the Son. Romans 8:29

Remember: The Kingdom is not a matter of talk but of power.

1 Corinthians 4:20 — For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Do I want that intimate relationship with the Father?

N - Never Forget to walk in wisdom

What wisdom looks like….

James 3:17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.

Remember: The Kingdom is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Romans 14:17 — “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

Am I walking in wisdom as God defines it?

D - Don’t assume you’ve fully grasped the Kingdom

Every Kingdom Practice is counterintutive to this life.

What do I mean?

In this life, I eat and get filled. Makes sense right?

In the Kingdom more I eat this word, the more hungry I become for his word. The more I pray, the easier it is to always pray. The more I get encouraged by others, the more I can encourage others. The more I feel joy, the more joyful I become. The more I obey, the more I want to obey.

But the reverse is also true.

The less I practice the Kingdom, the less I feel like practicing the Kingdom. The less I read my Bible, the less I want to read my Bible. The less I pray, the harder it is to pray. The less I time I spent in real relationship, the less I want to work on real relationship. The less real joy I feel, the less I naturally feel happy. The less I obey, the less I want to obey.

If you think you’ve fully grasped the Kingdom you need to know you’ve missed it.

Remember: The Kingdom is like a mustard seed that grows a large tree or a little yeast that permeates the entire dough. (Matthew 13:31-33)

Am I am growing more hungry for God or less hungry for Him?

FIND out what pleases the Lord.

F - Follow Holy Spirit’s Leading

I - Imitate what Jesus did

N - Never forget to walk in wisdom

D - Don’t assume you’ve fully grasped the Kingdom

Conclusion

Jesus told another parable about entering His Kingdom.

Matthew 25:34-46 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

We’re part of the Kingdom when we obey the king.

You know God’s will by doing God’s will. The Kingdom is wherever God’s will is done.

Closing prayer…

Colossians 1:9-14 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask

{May} God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

• Share testimonies of answered prayers.
• Pray together, thanking God for His work in your lives.

Common Questions About Gratitude and Faith

How can I be grateful when life is hard?

Remember, gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is perfect. Even in trials, you can thank God for His presence and promises (Psalm 23:4).

What if I don’t feel grateful?

Feelings follow actions. Start by listing even the smallest blessings—like a friend’s message or a beautiful sunrise. Over time, your heart will catch up. When you train your brain for 70 days, you’re actually rewiring it so feeling grateful becomes easier.

3 Simple Ways to Strengthen Faith through Gratitude Today

1. Begin your prayers with thanks – Before asking for anything, thank God for who He is and what He’s already done.
2. Encourage someone else – Send a note or message expressing gratitude for their role in your life.
3. Reflect on Scripture – Meditate on verses about thankfulness, such as Colossians 3:17.

Conclusion: Keep Growing in Gratitude

The Gratitude Challenge isn’t just about feeling better—it’s about rooting your faith deeper in God’s love and goodness. When you make gratitude a habit, you’ll find your faith strengthened in surprising ways.

Why Trusting God’s Promises Matters

Life throws challenges at us—uncertainty, setbacks, and seasons of waiting. In these moments, trusting God’s promises gives us hope and assurance. The Bible is full of reminders that God is faithful and true to His Word (Numbers 23:19). When we anchor our lives in His promises, we find strength to persevere.

What Are God’s Promises?

God’s promises are declarations found in Scripture that reveal His plans and character. These include promises of:

• Provision: Philippians 4:19 – “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
• Peace: John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you…”
• Presence: Matthew 28:20 – “…I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Each promise is rooted in God’s love for His people.

How Do We Trust God’s Promises?

Trusting is more than knowing—it’s living as if God’s Word is true. Here are practical steps:

1. Read the Bible Regularly

• Discover God’s promises firsthand.
• Note verses that speak to your situation.

2. Pray Honestly

• Share your doubts with God.
• Ask for faith to trust Him more.

3. Remember Past Faithfulness

• Reflect on times God has answered prayers.
• Keep a gratitude journal of blessings.

4. Encourage One Another

• Share stories of God’s faithfulness with friends and family.
• Listen to testimonies that strengthen your trust.

Common Questions About Trusting God’s Promises

Q: Can I trust God even when circumstances seem hopeless?
A: Yes. Hebrews 10:23 encourages us: “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” Even when answers are delayed, God remains trustworthy.

Q: What if I struggle with doubt?
A: Doubt is natural. Bring it to God in prayer (Mark 9:24). Ask Him to help your unbelief and seek encouragement from fellow believers.

Q: Are God’s promises for everyone?
A: Many promises are for all who follow Jesus. Some are specific to certain people or situations, so always read verses in context.

So this is the "In your heart, set apart Christ as Lord" tool.

Is He Lord of my Attitude?

The first question we can ask ourselves is, "Is Christ Lord of my attitude?" My attitude reflects my emotions.

This is what the Bible says in Philippians 2:5-8: "You must have the same attitude as Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he didn't think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up divine privileges. He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to God and died a criminal's death on the cross."

Ephesians 4:21-23 states, "Since you have heard about Christ and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception, and let the spirit renew your thoughts and your attitudes."

1 Peter 4:1-2 says, "Since then you have suffered physical pain, you must arm yourself with the same attitude he had and be ready to suffer too. If you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You won't spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be eager to do the will of God."

Finally, Romans 8:6 says, "Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death, but letting the spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Is He Lord of my Attitude?

Is he Lord of my emotions? Is Christ Lord of my attitude? Chuck Swindoll said, "I believe the single most significant decision I can make every day is my choice of attitude. It's more important than my past, my education, my finances, my success or my failures, my pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances or my position. My attitude keeps me going or hinders my progress. It alone fuels my fire or assaults my hopes. When my attitudes are right, there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me."

So the question once again is, in your heart, have you set apart Christ as Lord? Is he Lord of your attitude?

Is He Lord of my Answers?

The next step is, is Christ Lord of my answers? We get this from 1 Peter 3:9-10: "Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with blessings, for that is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing."

For scripture says, "I want you to enjoy life and see many happy days. Keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies." Proverbs 15:1 states, "A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare." Christ needs to be Lord of your answers.

When we talk about the heart being the seat of our emotions, decisions, and actions, answers reflect our decisions. We choose how we respond. An answer can come from our emotional level; it can be good or bad without passing judgment. However, when I decide to have my answers reflect God's answers, it’s powerful.

In your heart, is Christ set apart as Lord?

In your heart, set apart Christ as Lord. Is he Lord of your attitude? Is he Lord of your answers? The final question we can ask ourselves is, if Christ is set apart in my heart, have I set apart Christ as Lord? Is Christ Lord of my actions? This comes from James 4:17 and 1 Peter 3. James 4 states, "Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it."

Proverbs 84:11 says, "For the Lord our God is our sun and shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right."

1 Peter 3 says, "Turn away from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers, but the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”

When I recognize Jesus is Lord…

When Christ is Lord of my life, he is Lord of my actions. He is Lord of my attitude. He is Lord of my answers. One day we will stand before him, and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that he is Lord. The difference it makes if we do that now is that it will be a time of celebration. It will be a time of exaltation.

So the question we need to consider is: Is Christ Lord of all? We will all have those moments. Have grace for yourself. Use this tool daily; ask yourself if Christ was Lord of that answer? Was Christ Lord of that attitude? Was that action done with Christ as Lord?

Ephesians 4:14-25 MSG No prolonged infancies among us, please. We’ll not tolerate babes in the woods, small children who are easy prey for predators. God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other. His very breath and blood flow through us, nourishing us so that we will grow up healthy in God, robust in love. And so I insist—and God backs me up on this—that there be no going along with the crowd, the empty-headed, mindless crowd. They’ve refused for so long to deal with God that they’ve lost touch not only with God but with reality itself. They can’t think straight anymore. Feeling no pain, they let themselves go in sexual obsession, addicted to every sort of perversion. But that’s no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.

What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretence. Tell your neighbour the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.

The first step to Live Loved is to Leave Pretence Behind.

What do I mean by that?

The Problem

I’ve never been taught, but I’ve definitely caught and probably passed on a view that I’d call plastic Christianity.

You’ve definitely seen this. You’ve maybe even practiced it yourself.

6 Characteristics of Plastic Christianity

1. Superficiality see Mt. 15:8-9
2. Legalism see Ga. 5:4
3. Cultural Conformity seeRo. 12:2
4. Transactional Faith see Is. 29:13
5. Inauthenticity see 1Jn 1:6
6. Focus on Self not God see Ph. 2:3-4

The good news is… with any one of those characteristics the solution is confession and repentance. Confession is agreeing with God His judgment is right. Repentance is turning around and going in the opposite direction. I’ll show you how to do that in the remainder of this message.

I am all in favour of having scripture verses on our walls and around our photos. I’m not of fan of leaving it at that.

That to me is plastic Christianity. It’s when people see the show before they see the love, joy, peace, patience,kindness, goodness faithfulness gentleness and self control. It is telling people about the hope that you have before they ask the reason for the hope you have and it’s ignoring the gentleness and respect part that we should never forget.

I cannot do it for the show or do it for the dough or do it for the worry or do it for the hurry. Jesus explains all this on the sermon on the mount.

In fact I’ve learned the value of doing everything with my whole heart. My emotions, my decision and my actions need to align for me to do anything with my whole heart. We’re told to do 7 things with our whole heart

1. Trust God - Proverbs 3:5
2. Seek God - Jeremiah 29:13
3. Forgive Others - Matthew 18:35
4. Love and Serve God - Deuteronomy 10:12
5. Thank God - Psalms 138:1
6. Praise God - Psalms 103:1
7. Work as unto the Lord - Colossians 3:23

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”

So I believe we’re to do everything we do with our whole heart.

What is our whole heart? It’s our decision, our actions and our emotions. All three need to agree.

Every one of those characteristics of Plastic Christianity are focussed on something other than our whole heart.

When you’re doing everything with your whole heart, working as unto the Lord, you cannot live as a plastic christian.

Does it really matter?

We live in a culture that ignores the positive things the church does for society.

I grew up watching every Christian in almost every tv show be the murderer, adulterer or child molester. It was lazy writing. See a Christian in a murder mystery, you know who did the murder. As a church we are irrelevant to society… we have an incredible positive effect on society, but it’s unrecognized and unappreciated.

Most of the church doesn’t know the positive effect it has on society. It does little to no good to clammer to get a seat at the table.

But individuals, people God has intentionally placed in the day-to-day of your everyday, respond beautifully to the love of God they see you in you. Everyone needs to know they are loved. They won’t know they’re loved if they don’t trust your love is real. No more plastic christianity!

Let me give you an example that happened over 30 years ago.

Story of two guys I worked with at the hospital on the weekend…. They told me about their lives and it was heartbreaking. We had some amazing conversations over breakfast. They were both gay…

When I told them I was stopping the shift because I was headed back to school, they asked where I’d be going. I told them “Seminary” and they were shocked. “You’re a Christian? But I like you.” I told them, “I like you too, I really appreciated getting to know you!”

They were the first people in that situation to share their reality with me. I was the first Christian they knew who didn’t yell at them, disown them or beat them up.

Christians, we’ve got to do better.

More recent friendship…looking for micro aggressions. People hold to all kinds of pain and don’t know God loves them and have only been told and only experienced that Christians hate them.

Christians, we’ve got to do better.

It’s starts with being real before God before we can be real before people.

What is the greatest commandment?

Matthew 22:37-40 (NLT): Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

To live LOVED we love God. And we can love God and love others by remembering how we are loved by Him…

To live loved means that we’re loved…

and the fact we’re loved by God is most important.

John 16:27, Romans 5:8, 1 John 3:1; 4:10;19, Revelation 1:5

Because God’s love for us surpasses knowledge

Ephesians 3:17-19

and nothing can separate us from His love…

Romans 8:35-39

…remembering God is love and love comes from God

1 John 4:7-8;16

…and he disciplines those He loves.

Hebrews 12:6; Revelation 3:19

Understanding and experiencing God’s love for us …allows us to L - Leave pretence behind

How do you leave pretence behind?

That’s a great question, I’m so glad you asked.

You need to BE REAL before God.

Let’s unpack…

B - Be honest with your self and God

1 John 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Superficiality refers to a shallow approach to faith that prioritizes outward expressions, such as rituals or appearances, over genuine inner transformation and heartfelt devotion to God.

Matthew 15:8-9: "These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules."

Confession and repentance replaces superficiality.

We have His pardon so we can BE REAL before God

Romans 3:23-24 NLT For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Would God say I’m superficial in my walk with Him?

E - Examine your humility

James 4:10  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Legalism is strict adherence to religious laws and rules, often at the expense of grace and mercy. Legalism emphasizes performance and compliance over a personal relationship with God, leading to judgmental attitudes.

Galatians 5:4: "You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace."

We have His propitiation so we can BE REAL before God. Propitiation means God’s justice is satisfied. It’s part of the aspect of grace we need to BE REAL before God.

Be honest with God. You can say to God, “Not that it’s true, but it feels that it’s true…”

Hebrews 4:16 NLT So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Would God say I’ve fallen away from grace?

R - Respond to Him in Worship

John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

Cultural Conformity is tendency to align one's beliefs and practices with societal norms rather than biblical truths. This can result in compromising core values in order to fit in or be accepted by the surrounding culture.

1 John 2:15-17: "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever."

Worship keeps us away from cultural conformity.

We have His presence so we can BE REAL before God

In His presence is fullness of joy. His presence transforms us. Worship cannot be the slow part of the song service, it needs to be our life.

Romans 12:1-2 NLT And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.  Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Would God say I’m conforming to the world or do I worship Him in Spirit and in Truth?

E - Engage trusting Him

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Transactional Faith is mindset that views the relationship with God as a transaction, where blessings or favours are expected in return for religious actions or behaviours, rather than emphasizing trust, love, and surrender.

Isaiah 29:13: "The Lord says: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.’"

Transactional faith is overcome when we trust God to be God and God to be good.

As we trust in Him, we have His peace, hope and joy so we can BE REAL before God.

Romans 15:13 (NLT) I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Would God say I’m trusting Him? Do I have peace and joy and hope?

A - Access available accountability

Galatians 6:2   Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Inauthenticity involves presenting a false image of spirituality that does not reflect true faith or integrity.

1 John 1:6: "If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth."

Inauthenticity is seen by everyone. It’s confronted by friends.

We have His people so we can BE REAL Before God.

Hebrews 10:24-25 NLT Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.  And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Do I allow someone else to see me as I am?

L - Leave the judging to Him

Psalm 139:23-24   Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Focus on Self not God is emphasis on personal desires, happiness, or success over selflessness and service to others. This characteristic often leads to a self-centred approach to faith rather than a commitment to love and serve others.

Philippians 2:3-4: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

Don’t give God credit for the works of the one who comes to steal, kill and destroy. Don’t judge someone else’s servant.

Leaving the judging to God destroys our focus on self.

We can have His perspective so can be BE REAL before God

What do you love about them?

Romans 14:10 NLT So why do you condemn another believer? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

Would God say I have selfish ambition or vain conceit?

How do you Leave Pretence behind? BE REAL before God.
