Celebrating the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

Gratitude is a powerful tool that can shift our perspective and enhance our well-being. One way to harness this power is through a structured practice, such as the Gratitude Challenge. Today, we celebrate the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge, an initiative designed to help individuals cultivate a deeper appreciation for life.

Problem

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in negativity and overlook the blessings that surround us. Stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction can cloud our minds, making it difficult to recognize the good things in life. This is where the Gratitude Challenge comes in. By committing to a period of focused gratitude, we can retrain our minds to notice and celebrate what truly matters.

Does This Really Matter?

You might wonder if participating in a 70-day challenge really makes a difference. The answer is a resounding yes! Research shows that practicing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, improved mental health, and stronger relationships. When we take time each day to acknowledge what we are thankful for, we create a positive feedback loop that enhances our overall well-being.

Scripture

Many are familiar with the biblical verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This verse encourages us to appreciate both the highs and lows of life. By engaging in the Gratitude Challenge, we embody this spirit of thankfulness, learning to express appreciation even during tough times.

What If?

What if you dedicated just a few moments each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for? Picture yourself waking up in the morning, taking a deep breath, and listing three things that bring you joy. This simple practice can set a positive tone for your day and help you face challenges with resilience.

Imagine

Imagine keeping a gratitude journal for 70 days. Each day, you jot down something different that you appreciate—be it a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or even a sunny afternoon. As the days pass, you’ll begin to notice patterns and themes in your life. Your perspective will shift as you start to recognize how much beauty and kindness exists around you.

My Experience for the Inaugural 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

I’ve said it for years, but I think I’ve only started to grasp it in the past 70 days…

Gratitude is a game changer.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I know what the studies show—if you feel gratitude and write it in journal in 21-28 days you’ll report being 10% happier. But I didn’t expect—choosing to give thanks, feeling gratitude for what I give thanks for and showing appreciation for what I feel gratitude for—to make such a profound difference in my life.

I’d tell people this is what I’m doing, “Well that’s easy”. I’m “The challenge is doing is every day for 70 days” and it was. By day 28 I was realizing I was laughing out loud more and singing worship songs when none were playing. It became fun…until around day 43. I got out of my rhythm.

My rhythm was to journal. I write down my thoughts to God. Present them to him so he can direct my steps or pour out my complaint to Him—yes those days still happen. Then I would write “What do you want me to feel gratitude for today?” And I’d meditate and read the Bible. Often in the meditation or Bible Reading I’d feel gratitude. If it didn’t happen, I’d be still and know He is God, then follow where my compassion led in my thoughts. Soon I’d feel gratitude, then I would write what I felt gratitude in the journal. Often it was for God or something He does, so my journal entry would naturally turn to praise because that’s how we show appreciation to God for who He is and what He does.

This is a rhythm I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

I am changed and I am being changed through gratitude. It’s a game changer.

You can do your own 70-Day Gratitude Challenge any time. You can do it with any body. My material is decidedly Christian, but you can do with people of any faith or no faith. All you need to do is:

Every day for 70 days…

Choose to give thanks
Feel grateful for what you give thanks for
Show appreciation for what you feel gratitude for

And figure out how you’ll do it as a group. The possibilities are endless. You do you. Daily phone call or group text; weekly check in through a video call on at a local coffee shop; celebrating milestones—like letting someone in when they indicate they want to be in your lane—with a group cheer or night out.

Thanksgiving is a great time to start.

Studies show that 3 sets of 21 or 63 - 70 days our brains move our conscious thoughts to the autonomic part of our brain. You’ll naturally feel gratitude in about 63 - 70 days - which is why the challenge is that long.

Also did you know we can’t hold anxiousness and gratitude in our minds at the same time? It’s either one or the other.

Choose Gratitude.

Read Testimony leads to gratitude because God is so good

As I pause and reflect on this day, I am overwhelmed by a profound sense of gratitude. The blessings and goodness have followed me all the days of my life, and for that, I am truly thankful. My boundary lines have fallen in pleasant places. The LORD is good to me. I know that full well.

I will give thanks to You, LORD, with all my heart and will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. I will rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is Your will for me. The LORD is good and His steadfast love endures forever!

Life hasn’t always been good, but He has put all things together for the good and made me more and more like Jesus through it all. I’m not there yet, but He will finish the good work He has started in me and gives me enough grace every day.

I’ve learned to not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, I present my requests to God. I cast my cares upon Him because He cares for me. In times of prayer, I exchange my problems for His peace.

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him. I will give thanks to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds on my behalf. He has made a way when there is no way and has opened doors that no one can open and shut doors no one could shut. He has performed miracles in my body and life. When I went through deep waters, He was with me. And when I went through high rivers, I was not drowned. When I walked through the fire of oppression, I was not burned up; the flames did not consume me. He has been so good to me!

I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving. I enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. By the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony, I will overcome. No weapon forged against me will prosper.

Today, I remember that the testimony of Jesus is prophecy. When I remember the good things He’s done, I invite Him to do it again. I make known His deeds among the peoples and testified of the good He’s doing in and through my life. Even so, come Lord Jesus! Come!

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. How has God’s goodness and blessings followed me throughout my life, and what specific instances of gratitude can I recall?
  2. In what ways have I experienced God’s peace and provision, especially during challenging times when I presented my requests to Him in prayer?
  3. Reflecting on the testimonies of God’s faithfulness and miracles in my life, how can I invite Him to continue working and performing wonders in my present circumstances?

Read My blessings from the Lord are as abundant as the stars

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the countless blessings that the Lord has poured upon me. Each day, I am reminded of His faithfulness and love, as His blessings shine brightly in my life, just like the stars in the night sky.

He blesses me, and I am truly blessed. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Indeed, He is my guide, my protector, and my provider. In His loving care, I lack no good thing. He has blessed me abundantly with all that I need and more. I am filled with awe and thanksgiving for His provision in every aspect of my life.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits. How could I forget the countless ways He has shown His love and grace? From the simplest joys to the greatest triumphs, His hand is evident in every blessing that I receive. It is a humbling experience to acknowledge and appreciate the goodness of the Lord in my life. God is so good! I will praise Him and thank Him with all of my heart.

I know every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. The blessings that I receive are not mere coincidences or random occurrences; they are gifts from a loving Heavenly Father who delights in blessing His children. Like the stars that shine brightly in the darkness, each blessing serves as a reminder of His unfailing love and grace.

My God supplies every need of mine according to His riches in glory. The Lord knows my needs even before I ask, and He graciously provides for me. Whether it is physical needs, emotional support, or spiritual nourishment, He abundantly provides from His limitless resources. The Lord holds my future in His hands, and His plans for me are filled with hope and goodness. Even when life seems chaotic or unclear, I can trust that He is working all things together for my good.

Today, I am reminded that my blessings from the Lord are as abundant as the stars. His thoughts for me are more than the sand on every beach in every ocean and every dune in every desert. Each blessing serves as a testament to His faithfulness, love, and provision.

They bring hope, joy, and a deep sense of gratitude within me. Just as the stars light up the night sky, so do His blessings illuminate my life with purpose and meaning. I will never cease to offer thanks to the One who blesses me abundantly. He is so good to me. I will be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. How can I cultivate a greater sense of gratitude in my life for the countless blessings that the Lord has given to me?
  2. In what ways can I align my desires and plans with God’s will, trusting that He will faithfully provide for my needs and fulfill the desires of my heart?
  3. How can I deepen my trust in the Lord’s guidance and surrender my own understanding, allowing Him to make straight my paths and lead me in His perfect plan?

Read I appreciate my travel experiences

Reflecting on my travels, I often find myself in awe at the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Each new place I visit reveals another facet of His majesty, from the grandeur of mountain peaks to the depths of turquoise seas.

Travel has also taught me to trust in God’s guidance. I’ve learned to trust in the LORD with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding. I know that in all my ways I honour Him, and He makes my paths straight. Sometimes my journey was fraught with uncertainty, but I am reminded to cast my cares upon the Lord because He cares for me.

On my journeys, I have also learned to appreciate the diversity of people and cultures. I am in awe that from one person He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.

Every culture has its unique beauty and value, each one a testament to God’s creative power. He has put eternity in all of our hearts. My travels not just as personal adventures, but as opportunities to share God’s love with others. My travel experiences become a treasure trove of not just memories, but spiritual lessons, too.

Travel has taught me about God’s steadfast love, and faithfulness that spans beyond borders. I know that neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. No matter where my journeys take me, I am assured that His love remains constant.

But perhaps one of the most profound lessons travel has taught me is gratitude. I’ve learned to give thanks in all circumstances; knowing this is God’s will for me. Whether I’m standing atop a mountain or navigating a bustling city street, I’ve learned to cultivate an attitude of gratitude for every experience.

Today, I treasure my travel experience and thank God for the opportunities I’ve had to experience more of His creation. I make the space to remember the awe and I am grateful.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. How can I cultivate a deeper sense of gratitude in my daily life, even when I’m not traveling?
  2. In what ways can I further trust in God’s guidance during times of uncertainty?
  3. How can I better use my travel experiences to share God’s love with others and fulfill the great commission?

Read I have an attitude of gratitude because God is so good

Every new dawn brings with it a fresh opportunity to reflect on the vastness of God’s love and goodness. It’s an incredible blessing that instills in me an attitude of gratitude. The mere fact that I wake up each day, breathe, and go about my life is a testament to God’s unwavering goodness. This daily miracle I sometimes overlooked, yet it’s a gift that deserves my thanks.

God’s love is clear in every aspect of my life, from the grandeur of the universe to the minutiae of the day-to-day of every day. The sun that rises each morning, the rain that waters our crops, and the air we breathe are all expressions of His divine goodness. These natural phenomena, though simple, are profound reminders of His benevolent presence in our lives. He sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous, so I know I must act as a true child of His and love the ones who don’t choose to live at peace with me, and I pray for those who persecute me.

God’s goodness is also deeply personal and unique towards me. He has given me gifts and talents, helping me to find my purpose in life. In whatever I do, I can love God and love others so they can love God and love others. He guides me through life’s winding paths, teaching me lifelong lessons that shape me more and more into the image of the Son, whom He loves.

In times of troubles, God’s goodness remains constant. Through these experiences, He fortifies my faith and resilience, strengthening me and making me wiser. He works all things together for the good of those He calls. It is in these moments that His love shines the brightest, guiding me towards growth and healing.

God’s goodness is manifested in the love and kindness I receive from others. Every act of compassion and goodwill I encounter reflects His divine love. I extend this love to those around me, becoming a vessel of His goodness. My attitude of gratitude stems from recognizing God’s abundant goodness in every aspect of life. His love is ubiquitous—in the rising sun, in the falling rain, in the air I breathe, in my unique talents, in life’s lessons, in acts of kindness I receive and give.

Today, I am grateful because God is so good.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. In what specific everyday events or aspects can I see God’s goodness, and how do they inspire gratitude within me?
  2. How has experiencing trials or challenges strengthened my faith and deepened my understanding of God’s constant goodness?
  3. How can I extend God’s goodness to others, and why is this important in cultivating an attitude of gratitude?

Read I feel gratitude for simple blessings

As I lift my eyes to the skies, I sink deep into a state of gratitude. It’s the Lord who loves me, who created all things seen and unseen. He knew me in my mother’s womb and ordained all of by days before one of them came to be. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me to comprehend. I know that full well. This posture takes my mind to each blessing that is presented before me by Holy Spirit. I think about the small things I enjoy in the day-to-day of every day. Even the simplest of blessings remembered help me develop the practice of gratitude.

Before I retire to bed each night, I consciously assess how I feel - physically, mentally, and emotionally. I work through any unresolved feelings and choose to forgive any offence. I choose to not go to bed angry and give the enemy a foothold in my life. Other days, I go through that exercise without identifying a single pain. It is a good feeling to know I’m in the right place with both God and others.

When I consider the meals that I have several times each day, I recognize the blessing. In 2024, earning more than $30,000 a year puts me in the top 1% of the world’s wealthiest. While it shocks be to know there are so many who lack, I am blessed that food and other necessities are plentiful in my life. I support those who effectively provide for those who go without. Planting my seed in good soil, I do what I can to help whoever I can. I don’t forget I am blessed to be a blessing. I am generous with what God has blessed me with.

I notice and say thanks each time someone does a kind gesture for me. I know how difficult it is to look beyond one’s challenges and focus on being kind to someone else. My spirit is grateful when another person takes the time to be nice to me. Experiencing the beauty of living is exhilarating. I look to see what God loves about people and compliment them on what I see.

As I give thanks for my wonderful life, I am filled with joy and satisfaction. I am overflowing with love and warmth and am trusting my good Father, who provides all I need. I cast my cares on Him because He cares for me. Life is good because God is good and He’s in a good mood. I know I need to give thanks in all circumstances, and when I’m filled with Holy Spirit, it’s natural for me to give thanks for all circumstances.

Today, quiet time provides the occasion to meditate on the precious blessings that He has given to me. My life is golden because there is so much to be grateful for.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. How easy is it for me to identify simple blessings when I feel unsettled?
  2. How do I show appreciation for the little things I feel thankful for?
  3. Do I worry about nothing, pray about everything and give thanks in all things?

Read I experience feelings of happiness each day

It pleases me that each day of my life, I experience feelings of happiness. I know that happiness is a by-product, not the goal. I have one priority and that’s seeking first His kingdom and righteousness, knowing all the things I could worry about will be given to me as I seek Him. Happiness comes as I see His will done on earth as it is in heaven.

I focus on finding joy throughout the day. I so enjoy a good heart-felt laugh. My life is full when I surprise myself with my laughter. My everyday world is wonderful because I experience so many things that I know make God happy, so I am happy.

In the morning, I wake up with feelings of refreshment, wonder, and curiosity. I think about what my day might bring. I look to see what God might say. Perhaps I can see an old friend today or meet a new one? I am still and know that He is God. I am so thankful that He is good.

As the sun rises, my joy is just beginning. While there are fleeting things that bring me happiness, I am aware of the many reasons I have joy. The God of hope fills me with all peace and joy as I trust in Him, so I can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit.

I know godliness with contentment is great gain. All of us came into this world with nothing, and nothing is going with us on the way out! So as long as I am clothed and fed, I know I can be happy. It’s my ambition to live a quiet life, to mind my own business and to work with my hands, so people who are not believers will respect the way I live, and I will not need to depend on others. I depend only on God.

By cherishing the present moment, knowing God is present with me, I maintain a positive outlook. I smile to myself, expressing gratitude for my life and the opportunities this day presents. I know even a forced smile changes my mood. The joy I feel serves as a reminder of the abundant love I have in my life and confidence in the hope of what’s coming. The best is yet to come for all who believe!

Today, I steward the grace He has poured onto me. His grace is not without effect. It leads to happiness as a by-product. Each day offers a new opportunity to embrace joy and remind myself of the love and contentment that fills my life. For this, I am deeply grateful.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. Is it my ambition to live a quiet life?
  2. Can I be present and enjoy this moment?
  3. When was the last time I really laughed?

I am truly blessed with abundance in my life. I express my gratitude for every good thing that comes from the unwavering source of heavenly light, the Father, who never changes or casts shifting shadows. Every morning when I wake up and every night before bed, I reflect on the multitude of blessings He has given me. Feeling gratitude reminds me to enjoy each of the many gifts that He has entrusted to me.

Recognizing that blessings can be both big and small, I remain attentive to the constant stream of gifts that come my way. They may come as a loving embrace from my child or a friend, or as a successful completion of a specific goal. Regardless of their form, I am always paying close attention for the blessing of God.

Every single moment of this existence is a gift. I regularly pause and express gratitude for the breath that sustains me and the body that carries me through each day. I take immense pleasure in engaging in physical activities, knowing that good health is a precious blessing.

My relationships bring me immense joy. Whether I have many friends or just a few, their value is immeasurable. They are a blessing in my life. The companionship of my partner is irreplaceable and cherished. I never underestimate the hole their absence would leave in my life. Even during the most challenging times, my family and friends provide solace and comfort. As a result, I hold my relationships dear and invest time and effort to nurture them, reaping what I sow.

Today, I take a moment to savour all the favour God gives me. I am more fully aware of the myriad of gifts that He has entrusted to me, and I am feel deeply grateful for every one of them.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. What overlooked gifts do I have in my life today?

I feel a profound sense of gratitude as my heart opens up and overflows. The happiness within me radiates, reaching out to the world. His love comes through me and flows through me to others. It’s this perfect love that casts out all fear.

When I take a moment to observe my surroundings, I am reminded of all the blessings in my life, and for that, I am truly grateful. I think of something from the past, something from today and something really small I feel gratitude for. I take time to feel grateful. In this state of generous gratitude, I trust God and that He is working all things for the good of those who love Him. Trusting Him gives me peace and joy and hope.

With each passing day, as I continue to appreciate everything around me, I am rewarded with even more reasons to be grateful. Anticipation fills me as I witness His hand at work. I find joy and amusement in the mysterious synchronicities that unfold before my eyes. There are no “coincidences” when I trust God is at work.

Just as a blooming flower gives rise to countless seeds, I marvel at how abundance multiplies in my life. I reap what I sow. I know those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So I don’t grow tired of doing what is good, for I know - at just the right time - I will reap a harvest of blessing if I don’t give up.

I have learned to recognize blessings in all things. Even in the face of challenges, I see opportunities for growth and wisdom. I understand that as I treat all hardship as discipline; I don’t give God credit for the works of the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. No discipline feels good at the time, but I know it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace when I have been trained by it.

Today, I am grateful for the wisdom I have gained throughout my life. I have reaped a bountiful harvest and appreciate all that I have been graciously entrusted with, as well as the endless possibilities ahead of me.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. What is something from the past, something from today and something really small that I FEEL grateful for?
  2. How can I show my appreciation for what I’m feeling grateful for?
  3. How can I show appreciation for all You’ve entrusted me with?

Read I can sit back and view all the wondrous things God has done for me

I take time to remember the good deeds of God. I remember to remember what He’s done for me. It’s so true. I have been through the fire and not been burned, and I have been through the waters and not been overwhelmed and I’ve been through the deep waters and not been drowned.

He’s made all things beautiful in its time. He’s worked and is working all things together for the good. What the enemy meant for evil, God has turned and is turning around for good. I know the best is yet to come because I believe. The future is bright because my good Father is already there. I know He is good because of what He’s already done. It’s not coincidence or luck, it’s His blessing and favour.

The favour of God is on me. Since God is for me, who can be against me? It’s not death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither my fears for today nor my worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate me from God’s love.

Does it mean He no longer loves me if I have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is mine through Christ, who loved me.

I reap what I sow. I plant positive seeds by thinking about whatever is good because I know the harvest will arrive and I will reap the benefits. So I have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. I look for what God loves in each of them and not just how they inconvenience or benefit my life. Christ’s love compels me and His life is me.

Today, I look for what He is doing and thank Him for what He has done.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. What is a difficult situation that God helped me through?
  2. What is a miracle I’ve witnessed in other people’s life?
  3. Do I wait with fear or enthusiasm for what I might find around the corner?

shelter of His wings

I sing in the shelter of His wings

“At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.” - Luke 10:21 (GW)

Read I sing in the shelter of His wings

God is my helper. I sing for joy in the shadow of His wings. He keeps me alive and singing! I look up to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let me stumble; the one who watches over me will not slumber. He never slumbers or sleeps.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in Him. He keeps me in perfect peace, even when I need to seek peace and pursue it. I step boldly to the throne of grace, where I can find mercy and grace to help when I need it most.

I keep my life free from the love of money, and am content with what I have because He has said, “I will never leave you; I will always be by your side.” Because of this promise, I can boldly say, The Lord is my help — I won’t be afraid of anything. How can anyone harm me?

He is my shepherd. I always have more than enough. He offers a resting place for me in His luxurious love. His path takes me to an oasis of peace near the quiet brook of bliss. That’s where He restores and revives my life. He opens before me the right path and leads me along in His footsteps of righteousness so that I can bring honour to His name.

Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness, I am not overcome by fear. His authority is my strength and my peace. The comfort of His love takes away my fear. I am never lonely, for He is near.

He spread out a table before me, provisions in the midst of attack from my enemies; He cares for all my needs, anointing my head with soothing, fragrant oil, filling my cup again and again with His grace. So why would I fear the future? Only goodness and tender love pursue me all the days of my life. Then afterward, when my life is through, I’ll return to His glorious presence to be forever with Him!

So today I remember to sing in the shelter of His wings.

Read I appreciate the anticipation of new things in my life

While I appreciate everything God has provided and entrusted to me, and while I know the power of testimony to invite God to do it again, I don’t revel only in the past. I don’t spend all my time recounting the victories of days gone by or the “glory days”. I look to see what God will say and see He is preparing something new; it’s happening now, even as I as listen to Him speak, and I know I am about to see it. He is preparing a way through the desert; and creating rivers in the dry wasteland. I appreciate the anticipation of new things in my life.

He is making all things new. Each morning, His mercies are made fresh. Because I belong to Christ, I am a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

I expect my good Father to work all things together for good and I trust Him to take care of all things that I need. I will ask and keep asking, knock and keep knocking, seek and keep seeking to develop who I am becoming. He will finish the good work He’s started in me.

I never doubt God’s mighty power to work in me and accomplish His will. He will achieve infinitely more than my greatest request, my most unbelievable dream, and exceed my wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for His miraculous power constantly energizes me.

The best is yet to come! No eye has ever seen, and no ear has ever heard and it has never occurred to the human heart all the things God prepared for those who love Him. One day I will be like Him, for I will see Him as He is, but eternity started the moment He rescued Me out of darkness into His wonderful light.

Today I raise my anticipation of good things from my good father. I am thankful for what I have and I appreciate the anticipation of new things in my life.

Reflection Questions to ask Holy Spirit:

  1. Who are the people should show appreciation for today?
  2. What special things in my life do I feel thankful for?
  3. Do I focus more on what I have instead of what others have?
