Why Is Attitude Important in a Gratitude Challenge?

Your attitude shapes how you see the world. If you’re striving to live with gratitude, a guarded attitude helps you stay focused even when days are tough.

What Does “Guarding Your Attitude” Mean?

Guarding your attitude means actively choosing what thoughts and feelings you allow to influence you.

Today, let’s focus on something crucial but often overlooked: guarding your attitude. Our attitude shapes how we experience gratitude and influences our relationships, faith, and daily life.

Why Guarding Your Attitude Matters

Attitude is the lens through which we see the world. Even when life throws curveballs, a thankful heart can help us respond with hope and resilience. Philippians 4:8 says,
"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."

Guarding your attitude isn’t just about positive thinking—it’s about aligning your mind with what honors God.

How to Guard Your Attitude

A guarded attitude doesn’t happen by accident. It’s a daily discipline—especially during a gratitude challenge. Here’s how you can make it part of your routine:

1. Start with Prayer

Begin each day asking God to help you see His blessings.

  • Pray for wisdom (James 1:5).
  • Ask for a grateful heart.

2. Practice Thankfulness

Write down three things you’re thankful for every morning.

  • Keep a gratitude journal.
  • Share your thanks with someone else each day.

3. Filter Negativity

Be mindful of what you allow into your heart and mind.

  • Limit exposure to negative media.
  • Surround yourself with encouraging people.

4. Reframe Challenges

Instead of dwelling on problems, look for God’s provision in every situation.

  • Turn complaints into prayers.
  • Reflect on Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him...”

Gratitude is a powerful tool that can shift our perspective and enhance our well-being. One way to harness this power is through a structured practice, such as the Gratitude Challenge. Today, we celebrate the 70-Day Gratitude Challenge, an initiative designed to help individuals cultivate a deeper appreciation for life.

Problem

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in negativity and overlook the blessings that surround us. Stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction can cloud our minds, making it difficult to recognize the good things in life. This is where the Gratitude Challenge comes in. By committing to a period of focused gratitude, we can retrain our minds to notice and celebrate what truly matters.

Does This Really Matter?

You might wonder if participating in a 70-day challenge really makes a difference. The answer is a resounding yes! Research shows that practicing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, improved mental health, and stronger relationships. When we take time each day to acknowledge what we are thankful for, we create a positive feedback loop that enhances our overall well-being.

Scripture

Many are familiar with the biblical verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This verse encourages us to appreciate both the highs and lows of life. By engaging in the Gratitude Challenge, we embody this spirit of thankfulness, learning to express appreciation even during tough times.

What If?

What if you dedicated just a few moments each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for? Picture yourself waking up in the morning, taking a deep breath, and listing three things that bring you joy. This simple practice can set a positive tone for your day and help you face challenges with resilience.

Imagine

Imagine keeping a gratitude journal for 70 days. Each day, you jot down something different that you appreciate—be it a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or even a sunny afternoon. As the days pass, you’ll begin to notice patterns and themes in your life. Your perspective will shift as you start to recognize how much beauty and kindness exists around you.

My Experience for the Inaugural 70-Day Gratitude Challenge

I’ve said it for years, but I think I’ve only started to grasp it in the past 70 days…

Gratitude is a game changer.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I know what the studies show—if you feel gratitude and write it in journal in 21-28 days you’ll report being 10% happier. But I didn’t expect—choosing to give thanks, feeling gratitude for what I give thanks for and showing appreciation for what I feel gratitude for—to make such a profound difference in my life.

I’d tell people this is what I’m doing, “Well that’s easy”. I’m “The challenge is doing is every day for 70 days” and it was. By day 28 I was realizing I was laughing out loud more and singing worship songs when none were playing. It became fun…until around day 43. I got out of my rhythm.

My rhythm was to journal. I write down my thoughts to God. Present them to him so he can direct my steps or pour out my complaint to Him—yes those days still happen. Then I would write “What do you want me to feel gratitude for today?” And I’d meditate and read the Bible. Often in the meditation or Bible Reading I’d feel gratitude. If it didn’t happen, I’d be still and know He is God, then follow where my compassion led in my thoughts. Soon I’d feel gratitude, then I would write what I felt gratitude in the journal. Often it was for God or something He does, so my journal entry would naturally turn to praise because that’s how we show appreciation to God for who He is and what He does.

This is a rhythm I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

I am changed and I am being changed through gratitude. It’s a game changer.

You can do your own 70-Day Gratitude Challenge any time. You can do it with any body. My material is decidedly Christian, but you can do with people of any faith or no faith. All you need to do is:

Every day for 70 days…

Choose to give thanks
Feel grateful for what you give thanks for
Show appreciation for what you feel gratitude for

And figure out how you’ll do it as a group. The possibilities are endless. You do you. Daily phone call or group text; weekly check in through a video call on at a local coffee shop; celebrating milestones—like letting someone in when they indicate they want to be in your lane—with a group cheer or night out.

Thanksgiving is a great time to start.

Studies show that 3 sets of 21 or 63 - 70 days our brains move our conscious thoughts to the autonomic part of our brain. You’ll naturally feel gratitude in about 63 - 70 days - which is why the challenge is that long.

Also did you know we can’t hold anxiousness and gratitude in our minds at the same time? It’s either one or the other.

I give thanks with my whole heart - I choose thanksgiving; I feel gratitude and I show appreciation. When I choose to give thanks, it’s a decision of my will. When I feel gratitude, that connects my emotions. And when I show appreciation, it aligns my action with my decision and emotions. My decision, my emotions and actions make up my whole heart.

I choose thanksgiving. Every morning, I make a conscious choice to give thanks for the gift of life and for the opportunities that lie ahead. I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; and I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. I give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for me in Christ Jesus. I choose to give thanks at the end of the day for specific things that happened for that day. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to declare His steadfast love in the morning, and His faithfulness by night.

I feel gratitude. Gratitude wells up within me as I reflect on the countless blessings showered upon me. Gratitude is a feeling I experience for the good things in my life. It involves choosing to recognize and acknowledge the blessings, kindness, or positive experiences that I have received from God and others in their day-to-day of every day.

Gratitude is often accompanied by a sense of humility. I can’t feel gratitude and pride at the same time. I let the peace of Christ rule in my heart, to which indeed I was called in one body. And I am thankful. This leads to a desire to express thanks or show acts of kindness in return.

I show appreciation. Gratitude should not be confined to mere words, but should be expressed through actions. The action could be to write in a gratitude journal, or it might be by showing my appreciation in practical ways. It could be expressed by acts of kindness in return for the kindness shown to me. Since I live by the Spirit, I keep in step with the Spirit and obey what He tells me to show appreciation. I will be still and know that He is God and follow the impressions that come to me.

Today, I choose to give thanks, feel gratitude, and show appreciation. Choosing to give thanks with my whole heart is essential for my journey with Him. My whole heart aligns with His heart for me, and I am blessed with peace and hope and joy as I trust in Him.

I have learned that limited resources can actually be a blessing in disguise. It is during times of scarcity that I learn to truly appreciate the abundant provision of my God. My Heavenly Father promises to supply all my needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. His assurance fills my heart with gratitude and peace.

The Lord is my shepherd, and I lack nothing. My perspective shifts. Instead of dwelling on what I don’t have, I choose to focus on the blessings that surround me. I give thanks in all circumstances, for it is God’s will for me in Christ Jesus. Gratitude becomes a way of life, regardless of my circumstances. When I store up treasures in heaven—where they will never be destroyed or stolen—I am not in an anxious pursuit of material possessions. I appreciate the true riches found in a relationship with God.

Contentment becomes my companion as I embrace godliness and trust in the Lord with all my heart. I understand that a little with the fear of the Lord is far greater than abundance, accompanied by trouble. My focus shifts from accumulating worldly wealth to seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness first.

In moments of trials and challenges, I find solace in knowing that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. He is for me and not against me and since He is for me, who can be against me? The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, and His mercies are new every morning. I count it all joy when facing various trials, for they produce endurance and greater faith.

Today, I am reminded of the faithfulness of my Heavenly Father. He knows my needs and provides for me abundantly. My limited resources become an opportunity for thankfulness, as they draw me closer to God and deepen my dependence on Him. I am grateful for His provision, His guidance, and His unwavering love. God is so good!

Every new dawn brings with it a fresh opportunity to reflect on the vastness of God’s love and goodness. It’s an incredible blessing that instills in me an attitude of gratitude. The mere fact that I wake up each day, breathe, and go about my life is a testament to God’s unwavering goodness. This daily miracle I sometimes overlooked, yet it’s a gift that deserves my thanks.

God’s love is clear in every aspect of my life, from the grandeur of the universe to the minutiae of the day-to-day of every day. The sun that rises each morning, the rain that waters our crops, and the air we breathe are all expressions of His divine goodness. These natural phenomena, though simple, are profound reminders of His benevolent presence in our lives. He sends rain on the righteous and unrighteous, so I know I must act as a true child of His and love the ones who don’t choose to live at peace with me, and I pray for those who persecute me.

God’s goodness is also deeply personal and unique towards me. He has given me gifts and talents, helping me to find my purpose in life. In whatever I do, I can love God and love others so they can love God and love others. He guides me through life’s winding paths, teaching me lifelong lessons that shape me more and more into the image of the Son, whom He loves.

In times of troubles, God’s goodness remains constant. Through these experiences, He fortifies my faith and resilience, strengthening me and making me wiser. He works all things together for the good of those He calls. It is in these moments that His love shines the brightest, guiding me towards growth and healing.

God’s goodness is manifested in the love and kindness I receive from others. Every act of compassion and goodwill I encounter reflects His divine love. I extend this love to those around me, becoming a vessel of His goodness. My attitude of gratitude stems from recognizing God’s abundant goodness in every aspect of life. His love is ubiquitous—in the rising sun, in the falling rain, in the air I breathe, in my unique talents, in life’s lessons, in acts of kindness I receive and give.

Today, I am grateful because God is so good.

  1. In what specific everyday events or aspects can I see God’s goodness, and how do they inspire gratitude within me?
  2. How has experiencing trials or challenges strengthened my faith and deepened my understanding of God’s constant goodness?

Thankfulness comes naturally to me. I know I am blessed and I decide to live blessed in the day-to-day of every day. Remembering gratitude brings me joy, and I actively choose to cultivate gratitude daily! This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!

I appreciate the amazing individuals who surround me. They provide me with companionship, support, intellectual stimulation, and spiritual guidance, which helps me grow. In return, I offer the same to them and find happiness in doing so. I seek their company and frequently express my appreciation for their presence in my life.

My material possessions are helpful and plentiful. I am blessed. They serve me; I don’t serve them. I live in a world of abundance and I am grateful for the numerous opportunities that exist, but I will not put any job or possession in the place of God. No one can serve two masters. All my needs are met, and many of my wants as well. So every day, I consciously choose to appreciate the material abundance that God has blessed me with.

If I ever wish things to differ from the way they are, I know He will give me the desires of my heart. I seek the Lord. I try to figure out what pleases Him. He prunes away the good to bring out the better and prunes the better to bring out the best. I trust Him to lead me and so I obey what He tells me to lay down and obey what He tells me to pick up. He is Lord of my life. I worry about nothing, pray about everything and give thanks in all things.

Because of my overwhelming gratitude and my trust in God, I consistently feel relaxed and joyful. After all, the boundary lines for me have fallen in pleasant places, I know that full well.

Today, I allow my natural gratitude to flourish. I perceive every experience as an opportunity for more thankfulness and greater joy. I make a point of finding the positive aspects in every situation and look to see what God is doing.

It pleases me that each day of my life, I experience feelings of happiness. I know that happiness is a by-product, not the goal. I have one priority and that’s seeking first His kingdom and righteousness, knowing all the things I could worry about will be given to me as I seek Him. Happiness comes as I see His will done on earth as it is in heaven.

I focus on finding joy throughout the day. I so enjoy a good heart-felt laugh. My life is full when I surprise myself with my laughter. My everyday world is wonderful because I experience so many things that I know make God happy, so I am happy.

In the morning, I wake up with feelings of refreshment, wonder, and curiosity. I think about what my day might bring. I look to see what God might say. Perhaps I can see an old friend today or meet a new one? I am still and know that He is God. I am so thankful that He is good.

As the sun rises, my joy is just beginning. While there are fleeting things that bring me happiness, I am aware of the many reasons I have joy. The God of hope fills me with all peace and joy as I trust in Him, so I can overflow with hope by the power of Holy Spirit.

I know godliness with contentment is great gain. All of us came into this world with nothing, and nothing is going with us on the way out! So as long as I am clothed and fed, I know I can be happy. It’s my ambition to live a quiet life, to mind my own business and to work with my hands, so people who are not believers will respect the way I live, and I will not need to depend on others. I depend only on God.

By cherishing the present moment, knowing God is present with me, I maintain a positive outlook. I smile to myself, expressing gratitude for my life and the opportunities this day presents. I know even a forced smile changes my mood. The joy I feel serves as a reminder of the abundant love I have in my life and confidence in the hope of what’s coming. The best is yet to come for all who believe!

Today, I steward the grace He has poured onto me. His grace is not without effect. It leads to happiness as a by-product. Each day offers a new opportunity to embrace joy and remind myself of the love and contentment that fills my life. For this, I am deeply grateful.

I am truly blessed with abundance in my life. I express my gratitude for every good thing that comes from the unwavering source of heavenly light, the Father, who never changes or casts shifting shadows. Every morning when I wake up and every night before bed, I reflect on the multitude of blessings He has given me. Feeling gratitude reminds me to enjoy each of the many gifts that He has entrusted to me.

Recognizing that blessings can be both big and small, I remain attentive to the constant stream of gifts that come my way. They may come as a loving embrace from my child or a friend, or as a successful completion of a specific goal. Regardless of their form, I am always paying close attention for the blessing of God.

Every single moment of this existence is a gift. I regularly pause and express gratitude for the breath that sustains me and the body that carries me through each day. I take immense pleasure in engaging in physical activities, knowing that good health is a precious blessing.

My relationships bring me immense joy. Whether I have many friends or just a few, their value is immeasurable. They are a blessing in my life. The companionship of my partner is irreplaceable and cherished. I never underestimate the hole their absence would leave in my life. Even during the most challenging times, my family and friends provide solace and comfort. As a result, I hold my relationships dear and invest time and effort to nurture them, reaping what I sow.

Today, I take a moment to savour all the favour God gives me. I am more fully aware of the myriad of gifts that He has entrusted to me, and I am feel deeply grateful for every one of them.

I take time to remember the good deeds of God. I remember to remember what He’s done for me. It’s so true. I have been through the fire and not been burned, and I have been through the waters and not been overwhelmed and I’ve been through the deep waters and not been drowned.

He’s made all things beautiful in its time. He’s worked and is working all things together for the good. What the enemy meant for evil, God has turned and is turning around for good. I know the best is yet to come because I believe. The future is bright because my good Father is already there. I know He is good because of what He’s already done. It’s not coincidence or luck, it’s His blessing and favour.

The favour of God is on me. Since God is for me, who can be against me? It’s not death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither my fears for today nor my worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate me from God’s love.

Does it mean He no longer loves me if I have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is mine through Christ, who loved me.

I reap what I sow. I plant positive seeds by thinking about whatever is good because I know the harvest will arrive and I will reap the benefits. So I have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. I look for what God loves in each of them and not just how they inconvenience or benefit my life. Christ’s love compels me and His life is me.

Today, I look for what He is doing and thank Him for what He has done.

  1. What is a difficult situation that God helped me through?
  2. What is a miracle I’ve witnessed in other people’s life?
  3. Do I wait with fear or enthusiasm for what I might find around the corner?

Read I appreciate the anticipation of new things in my life

While I appreciate everything God has provided and entrusted to me, and while I know the power of testimony to invite God to do it again, I don’t revel only in the past. I don’t spend all my time recounting the victories of days gone by or the “glory days”. I look to see what God will say and see He is preparing something new; it’s happening now, even as I as listen to Him speak, and I know I am about to see it. He is preparing a way through the desert; and creating rivers in the dry wasteland. I appreciate the anticipation of new things in my life.

He is making all things new. Each morning, His mercies are made fresh. Because I belong to Christ, I am a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

I expect my good Father to work all things together for good and I trust Him to take care of all things that I need. I will ask and keep asking, knock and keep knocking, seek and keep seeking to develop who I am becoming. He will finish the good work He’s started in me.

I never doubt God’s mighty power to work in me and accomplish His will. He will achieve infinitely more than my greatest request, my most unbelievable dream, and exceed my wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for His miraculous power constantly energizes me.

The best is yet to come! No eye has ever seen, and no ear has ever heard and it has never occurred to the human heart all the things God prepared for those who love Him. One day I will be like Him, for I will see Him as He is, but eternity started the moment He rescued Me out of darkness into His wonderful light.

Today I raise my anticipation of good things from my good father. I am thankful for what I have and I appreciate the anticipation of new things in my life.

No matter what yesterday felt like, birds always start the new day with a song. I choose to do the same with gratitude, regardless of what this day may hold, regardless of what yesterday was like. God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, His merciful love couldn’t have dried up. Both are recreated new every morning, fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise, so great is His faithfulness!

Before I check what is waiting for me, I give God thanks for this day and for being with me in it. I feel the gratitude of being alive and living every day of my life and I feel grateful for being known by my Creator who cares for me. I worry about nothing, pray about everything and thank God in all things because this is His will for me in Christ Jesus.

I don’t see myself as capable enough to do anything in my own strength, because the most alive version of me flows from God’s empowering presence. He empowers me to accomplish every good work prompted by faith. He equips me to be a capable servant of His new plan of action. I am not my own; I am bought with a price. I belong to God. Gratitude wells up inside me for this life, for I have the grace I need for today.

By the grace of God, I am who I am, and I have made sure that the grace He offered me has not been wasted. I work hard - whatever I do; I do as unto the Lord and work at it with all my heart - but it’s the grace of God that is doing the work in and through me.

He directs my steps, and He strengthens my arm. He helps me rise on wings as an eagle, or run and not grow weary, or walk and not faint. Whether I can fly, or run, or walk today, I will celebrate life’s marathon race with passion and determination. I let go of every wound that has pierced me and the sin I so easily fall into. I confess what He wants me to agree with and repent and turn away from everything thing and every thought that mis-aligns me with His presence. He is always with me.

Today, I will be with Him. No matter what season I may be in, no matter if I feel yesterday was overwhelming or a waste, today I sing like the birds. Birds always start the day with a new song, I will always start the day with thanksgiving.
